What Is Remote Online Notarization?

Remote Online Notarization (RON) allows a notary public to notarize documents using audio-visual technology — meaning you and the notary do not have to be in the same physical location. The process is conducted over a secure video platform, your identity is verified electronically, and the digital notarial seal is cryptographically embedded into the document, making it tamper-proof. Texas passed RON legislation in 2019, and RON documents are legally recognized across all 50 states and in many countries.

The Process

How Remote Online
Notarization Works

RON is designed to be as simple as possible. Email your documents ahead of time and we handle the rest — from preparation to secure delivery of your completed notarization, most sessions take under 30 minutes.

01
Schedule
Book your RON appointment online. You'll receive a confirmation and a secure link to your session.
02
Email Your Documents
Email your documents to info@uptownnotarysigning.com before your appointment. We review, prepare them, and send you a secure link to your video session.
03
Identity Verification
Complete Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA) — a series of questions only you can answer — and present a government-issued photo ID on camera.
04
Live Video Session
Click the secure link we sent you to join your notary on a live video call. You'll e-sign the document in real time while the notary witnesses and applies the digital seal.
05
Instant Delivery
Your completed, notarized document is delivered electronically within minutes. A tamper-evident seal protects the integrity of the document.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is RON legally valid in Texas?
Yes. Texas enacted the Remote Online Notarization Act in 2019. RON notarizations by a Texas-commissioned notary are legally valid in Texas and recognized across all 50 states under the Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts.
Do I have to be in Texas for RON?
No. You can be anywhere in the world during a RON session with a Texas-commissioned notary, as long as the underlying law allows for RON for your document type. The notary must be physically located in Texas at the time of the notarization.
What is Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA)?
KBA is an identity verification method that asks you to answer a series of dynamic questions based on your personal history — such as previous addresses, vehicle ownership, or loan history. These questions are generated from public records and are designed to confirm your identity. You must answer at least 80% correctly to proceed.
How long does a RON session take?
Most sessions take 15–30 minutes from start to finish, including identity verification and document signing. Complex documents or multiple signers may take longer.
Will the other party accept a RON notarization?
In most cases, yes. Courts, financial institutions, title companies, and government agencies accept RON documents. We recommend confirming with the receiving party before your session if there is any uncertainty about a specific document type.
Is the session recorded?
Yes. Texas law requires that all RON sessions be recorded and retained for at least five years. The recording serves as the official journal entry for the notarial act and provides a complete audit trail.
